Yesterday I was watching on ABC news Chef Toni Marie Cox from Toni Patisserie & Cafe make a traditional King Cake just in time for Mardi Gras.
To tell you the truth as a Brazilian it never occurred to me that you eat special treats on this occasion. I learn from them that the King Cake is a New Orleans tradition that's baked with a small plastic baby or trinket hidden inside. The rule is that the person who gets the slice with the trinket needs to has to host next year's party and gets good luck for a year! Toni's King Cakes are light, buttery coffee cake that are accented with right colored cinnamon-sugar and includes a paper crown and beads.
I quickly check on line the recipe while make a few calls to my friends in Rio to check how they are doing. nobody answers that meant they are obviously fine, but I know as of today that the Carnival Season 2012 like the Chinese Lantern Festival is coming today to an end.
All over the world, celebrations have been held as a final pre-Lent bacchanalian festival -- a way to usher out the winter and welcome spring. Across Europe and the Americas, parades and festivals have been taking place for nearly a month, culminating in the largest, most famous party of all: the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In Rio this weekend, millions took to the streets for days of rowdy, joyous parades and festivities, bringing the nation to a halt for its annual wild party.
Nearly 800,000 Brazilian and foreign tourists were expected join Rio's six million residents in the celebrations, whose climax comes on Sunday and Monday with the city's top samba schools putting on their extravagant processions. Gathered here are recent images of carnivals around the globe.
