Inspired by Mayan Traditions, Mexico’s Acclaimed Spa Calls on Ancient Practices to Impart Relaxation and Rejuvenation
It’s hard to leave my beautiful beach front casita with my small private pool, but there is a good reason for it. I grab my blue bike parked at the casita entrance and ride over the Puente del Balneario (“Spa Bridge”) and into Sense, A Rosewood Spa®. Immediately embraced into a sanctuary of tranquility and relaxation maybe from the fresh water maybe because it’s designed around a cenote, one of the sacred water wells of the ancient Mayans, and sitting on a private island.
After all , the resort is built to abide by the highest of eco-standards, offering indulgence with awareness, and has recently been awarded the Rainforest Alliance Certification.
Named one of the top 10 spas in Mexico, the island oasis includes 12 luxurious lagoon-side treatment rooms and eight private spa suites built around a cenote, an underground natural wonder of river systems and fresh water sinkholes which the Mayans consider to be a sacred entrance to the underworld.
The dedicated Spa Island features an adult’s only pool, state of the art fitness facility with a complete range of elliptical machines, treadmills, weights and mats. all of which are available throughout their stay. An outdoor relaxation area offers a sense of calm through the surrounding vegetation and natural sounds as guests sip refreshing local hibiscus juice or Rosewood Mayakoba’s signature green Chaya Juice, which combats bad cholesterol, keeps kidneys clean and provides high levels of Vitamin C and potassium to keep guests looking and feeling their best.
Remaining true to its locale and therapeutic influences, Sense, A Rosewood Spa® features a Temazcal, a traditional Mayan steam bath, which has been used over thousands of years for both healing and ritual purposes.
Taken a fully equipped locker areas boast rain showers, indoor lounge, sauna, steam room, and side-by-side hot and cold plunge pools, are just available for me. I am kindly handed a robe, slippers and a locker key. I am advised by a short Mexican woman in a neutral colored uniform that I should enjoy the facility for about half hour while asking me if I need her to help me scrub my nback with the different salts and olive oil displayed on a beautiful wood tray.
The Temazcal is a small domed structure built to hold in the warmth of hot stones that have been heated in an exterior fire and then placed in a central pit in the ground. The steam, produced by water infused with herbs, is a fusion of the virgin energy of volcanic rock designed to purify, cure, revitalize and balance. Guests intrigued by the spiritual element of the Temazcal experience can request the availability of a Mayan Shaman through the spa staff. I am scheduled for tomorrow, there I will be connected with mother earth reminding me of my own womb, hopefully I will be able to ourify myself in all that heat and sweat all my emotional toxins at once.
Among the various treatments, including facials, body scrubs, wraps and aromatherapy I chose a Mayakoba Signature Chocolate Ritual – Inspired by the magic of the Mayan calendar, this treatment fuses centuries of knowledge, traditional healing arts and local herbs to replenish body and soul. This soothing treatment includes a Body Sense treatment combined with the signature Ancient Massage. It will last 2.5 hours .
The Mayan tradition of aligning the energies of the body in rhythmic harmony is exactly what I need. Surrounded by the sounds of Mayakoba’s rivers and mangroves, the spa’s signature massage is set on a private lagoon island and integrates Mayan chocolate with the gentle, healing hands of our skilled therapists. This one-of-a-kind outdoor spa experience is designed to promote ultimate relaxation and balance between body, mind and spirit.
Chocolate is known for it’s energetic and antidepressant qualities . While I am taken to a nice room for a manicure and pedicure package the chocolate essence is especially blended into a massage oil and the gently will go through the , healing hands of the therapist that will help calm my nervous system, warm and relax my muscle tissue and promote the interaction between my body, mind and energy.
My face, neck, décolleté and hands are complemented with the soothing fresh fragrance of the natural elixir reminiscent of a colorful Caribbean fruit basket. to help an chorous line of singing monkeys . birds and reptiles from the jungle surrounding the cabana gives me a full sense of safety and balance making me believe that after all nothing is important in life, only the present moment The music is low, it’s a Paco de Lucia classical guitar , the light breeeze caresses and uplifts my spirit my soul gets revived.
Zizzy, relaxed and slightly Zombie, I now rest 15 minuets admiring the view of the mangrove before the sun sets. I am offereed a red fruit tea and left alone.
My ultimate hideaway tonight will relish in the resort’s Deluxe Island Suite, Rosewood Mayakoba’s most private accommodation, secluded on the Spa Island. Offering sweeping views of the property and its meandering lagoons, this one-of-a-kind 1,544-square-foot duplex suite features a private spa treatment cabin, luxurious master suite, two full bathrooms, and an expansive living and dining area decorated with crisp, contemporary furnishings. I will will find respite on the outdoor lounge terrace, complete with an inviting plunge pool and private outdoor shower. I am grateful and serene.
God, please Bless the Mayan for me and their miracle Chocolate.
